Arson Suspected in East Haddam Fire

Historic barn burns to the ground

An abandoned property on the grounds of the former Sunrise Resort has burned to the ground. It looks like someone set it on fire, state police said.

East Haddam firefighters rushed to the scene of a fire on Echo Farms Road around 1 a.m. Thursday. The state owns the property.

When they arrived, two large buildings were in flames. The building with the worst damage is the two-story barn.

“When we got here, this building right here (the barn) was fully engulfed and basically burnt to the ground, and this one had started from the exposure from the main fire,” Fire Chief Don Angersola said.

State police believe the fire was set because they found an accelerant at the scene, Lt. Paul Vance said.

Firefighters from East Haddam received helped putting out the fire from several other towns. They used water from a nearby pond to fight the fire.
