Fire Truck Brings Bridgeport First Grader to School

A first grader from Bridgeport got the ride to school of her dreams this morning when a big red fire truck took her to Black Rock School, with lights on and sirens sounding.

Liza Powell won the trip in a raffle at school during Fire Prevention Safety Week in October and firefighters took her on a tour of the city before dropping her off.

“It was so fun,” Liza said, wishing this was her ride to school every day.

It’s a moment her mother said she will remember forever as well.

“You want to create memories for your daughter. And this is something she’ll always remember, and I sincerely thank those firefighters for creating this memory for them. It just touches my heart and I know it touches hers too,” Liza’s mom, Sue Ellen Powell, said.

While the ride on the fire truck was the highlight of the day, the important lessons she learned during Fire Prevention Safety Week will serve her well, including “stop, drop and roll,” calling 911 when there is an emergency and making sure some detectors are operational.

“If you don’t have one, then they won’t know there’s a fire and the firefighters won’t come,” she said.

Firefighters from Engine 7 said they were glad to makes Powell’s day while also teaching the students about fire safety.
