Fire at New Haven Tire Center

The business on Stiles Street was heavily damaged.

Firefighters battled a 2-alarm blaze at a business in New Haven Monday morning.

Crews were called to Tire Center at 133 Stiles Street around 3:30 a.m.

At one point, firefighters put up three ladders from trucks to fight the flames from above.

"It was an extremely hot fire.  It was a second-alarm fire and the special calls asked for another tower ladder to assist in the operation," said Chief Thomas Neville.  "Tires are basically made from petroleum products.  They're very hot and give off a lot of smoke."

They extinguished the fire after about an hour, but damage to the business was extensive.

"I feel pretty scared," said Anna James, who witnessed the fire.  "It could have been the store too.  I feel bad for them as well.  I'm glad no one was in the store."

No one was injured. There is no word on a cause.
