The turkey call is getting louder has Thanksgiving approaches.
Foodshare in Connecticut still needs 1,300 turkeys to feed families across the state. And they've got just two days left to collect them before the distribution begins.
Foodshare set a goal in their annual "Turkey and a Twenty" food and fund drive this year. They wanted to collect 16,000 turkeys and $485,000 to help hungry families.
Not only do they distribute the birds, but they also hand out the fixings. And the cry for help from hungry families has increased this year, said organizer Alicia Flynn.
"We've about 2,000 more requests from different families than we've had in previous years," said Flynn.
Flynn attributes it to the economy. More people have been laid off, costs are on the rise, and money is all around tight.
"It's 1 in 10 people actually that need help from Foodshare or one of the programs we work with," she said.
To put it in perspective, their goal - 16,000 turkeys, is enough to feed everyone at a UConn Huskies game at Rentschler Field. That's including fans, players, press, and police.
It's a goal Foodshare knows is a big one, but an important one to reach.
There will be food drives across the state until Wednesday.
