A former Connecticut drama teacher has been sentenced to nine months in prison for having a sexual encounter with a student.

Jennifer Frechette, 46, of New Haven, was sentenced Monday. She pleaded no contest to having sexual contact with someone under 16.

According to the arrest warrant, the investigation began when school security officers found the student and Frechette together in a dressing room used for school plays in January 2017. Security officers also found battery-operated tea light candles, a mat that was set up with a quilt and pillows, and unused condoms in the room.

The victim told authorities he and Frechette exchanged flirtatious text messages and that Frechette performed a sex act on him in her classroom in December 2016.

Frechette must also register as a sex offender for 10 years.

The family of the victim is suing Frechette, the school board and the city for negligence.
