Former Rockefeller Manse Sells for $23M

Some mystery homeowner will be living like a Rockefeller, or at least in the family’s former house, after buying a Greenwich mansion for $23 million.

The 19,000-square-foot estate -- once home to the Rockefeller and Carnegie families -- has sold for nearly $23 million.

The mansion was built in 1929 as a wedding gift for James Stillman Rockefeller, grandnephew of Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller after he married Nancy Carnegie, a grandniece of steel magnate Andrew Carnegie.

Rockefeller lived at the estate until his death in 2004 at the age of 102.

Leslie McElwreath of Sotheby's International Realty listed the property in May for $23.9 million and said the seller, who bought the house in 2007 for $13.4 million, did an extensive renovation. She declined to name the buyers but said they own another house in town.

McElwreath said Monday the new owners like that fact that the 11 acre property is close to downtown.
