Yale's in. The school taking part in a massive digital library -- complete with online maps, rare books and manuscripts.

The World Digital Library is free of charge and includes holdings from the prestigious New Haven university and more than 30 other institutions, like the Library of Congress and Brown University, and others from around the world.

Yale has 27 items you can access. The collection includes pencil drawings of Amistad slave ship prisoners and a journal kept by a member of Ferdinand Magellan’s 1522 exploration of the globe.

You can browse by place, time, topic and even translate the work into seven languages.

According to the web site, the collection aims to “build capacity in partner institutions to narrow the digital divide within and between countries.”

Only four North American institutions are participating in the project.

The Library of Congress developed the site thanks to sponsorship from several U.S. companies.
