Amtrak Service Back to Normal After Freight Train Derailment

Amtrak bused passengers for hours this morning after a freight train derailed this morning, blocking the tracks.

The train, a Connecticut Southern freight train, derailed north of the train station in Hartford early this morning, forcing the train service to bus passengers between Springfield, Massachusetts and Hartford, where they boarded a train to New Haven and locations to the south.

The same was done for passengers heading from New Haven to Springfield, with commuters riding the train to Hartford, then boarding a bus to head further north

Amtrak officials told the Associated Press that the rail line was busing 141 passengers between the two cities. As of 10:05 a.m., service was back to normal.

Michael Williams, spokesman for Connecticut Southern Railroad, operator of the freight train, said one wheel on an empty flat car came off the rail. An investigation will determine why it happened. He called it a "very minor incident."

No one was injured and the track was not damaged.
