Connecticut State Police have announced funeral arrangements for Trooper First Class Walter Greene, who passed away following a battle with cancer as a result of his response in New York City in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001.
Greene passed away on Thursday, May 31. His illness is attributed to his response in the aftermath of the 9/11 World Trade Center Attack, police said. Greene was a 28-year veteran of the Connecticut State Police.
Calling hours for Trooper Greene will be Monday, June 11 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pavilion at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport. At noon, a procession to accompany Greene’s body will leave from Collins Funeral Home in Norwalk to Sherwood Island.
The funeral will take place on Tuesday, June 12 at 11 a.m. at Sherwood Island State Park, followed by a private burial service for family and friends in West Norwalk. Law enforcement from across the country is expected to attend.
Greene was a member of the 101st Training Trooper and most recently assigned to Traffic Services Unit. He served in the US Marine Corps for four years before joining Connecticut State Police in 1990. Over the years he was assigned to Troops A and G, the Statewide Cooperative Crime Control Task Force, and was a master instructor for motor services and a K-9 handler.
State police said he was an "avid supporter of the Special Olympics and actively participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run."
