A gas leak shut down busy New Haven streets and forced evacuations of surrounding homes Monday afternoon.
The leak happened in a high-pressure gas main on Quinnipiac Avenue. The road was shut down between Hemmingway Street and East Grand Avenue. A private company working on gas lines caused the break, police said.
Seven homes were evacuated as a precaution. Residents were allowed back in around 5 p.m.
