Get Gas for 99 Cents a Gallon

It's a sight that drivers haven't seen since 1988.

The signs at the Lukoil on West Town Street in Norwich will read $0.99 for two hours from 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Drivers who stopped to fill up Monday night couldn't believe it when they heard about the promotion.

"Are you kidding me? No suh!," said Kim Appio of Norwich.

"Holy moley!," said Paula Oberg of Norwich. "It's going to be lined up from 4 o'clock in the morning."

A lot of people don't believe it, Lukoil owner Mohammad Quareshi said. "I had a guy, he was pumping gas. He put $50 in his car and a guy comes in and tells him about it. He told me to shut the pump off and ran outside. He's like, 'I'll be back in the morning."

Quareshi agreed to drop the price for a promotion with the Connecticut Defenders. Players and the Defenders' mascot, Cutter, will hand out schedules to the 2009 season and prizes.

Quareshi said Monday he expected the sale on gas to draw big crowds and beefed up security in preparation for the rush.

"On the streets we are going to have police. They are going to be directing traffic, taking care of how everything is coming in and going out of the store," Quareshi said.

The Lukoil is located between the North and Southbound entrances to Interstate-395, an area that drivers say is usually busy during weekday rush hour. Some say this deal will make traffic even worse.

"I think its going to be too chaotic," Appio said. "I wouldn't wait in line."

But others are looking forward to the cheaper price.

"I think I should have waited until tomorrow to fill up my car," said Pat Adams of Norwich after she stopped at the station Monday night.

Quareshi says the $0.99 price will be available for customers who are at the fueling island between 8 and 10 a.m. Anyone who is still in line after 10 a.m., will have to pay the current retail price of $2.39 a gallon.
