Glassman Wins Democratic Endorsement for Connecticut's 5th Congressional District

Former Simsbury First Selectman Mary Glassman has won the Democratic endorsement for Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District.

In the final tally, Glassman received 173 votes, closely followed by Jahana Hayes, who won 167.

Democrats in the 5th Congressional District met in Waterbury Monday night to pick a nominee for the congressional seat currently held by U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty. Esty announced she would not seek a fourth term in response to criticism of her handling of sexual harassment complaints against her former chief of staff.

Glassman won the first round of voting, getting 149 of the 340 delegate votes, but the nominee must win 171 votes. Political newcomer Hayes, the 2016 national teacher of the year, came in second with 132, followed by New Britain Alderman Manny Sanchez with 57.

Sanchez, who had enough votes to move onto the primary, released his votes rather than participating in the second round, making it a contest between Glassman and Hayes.

Republicans on Friday endorsed former Meriden mayor, Manny Santos, an analyst with the United Health Care Group.
