Hamden Man Attacks Couple: Cops

A 70-year-old man was angry because he thought victim put something sticky on the floor, police said.

A Hamden man was arrested just before 1 a.m. on Monday, accused of pistol whipping a couple and shooting the woman in the face inside a boarding house.

Edward Dekine, 70, lives on the second floor of the boarding house at 233 Goodrich St. and was upset with Frank Babcock, 40, because he thought the man was placing a sticky substance on the kitchen floor, police said.

Police responded to the house at 12:45 a.m. after receiving a report that two people had been shot in the head.

When they arrived, officers determined that the alleged shooter was still inside the house and found Dekine holding a .38 caliber revolver in his hands, police said.

As they investigated, they learned that Babcock had left his bedroom to throw out trash and Dekine ran from his bedroom and threw Babcock to the ground, police said.

As Babcock ran into his own bedroom, a gunshot was fired and hit his wife, Joanne Brewer, 47, in the face, police said. Dekine is also accused of continuously pistol-whipping the couple.

Babcock and Brewer were transported to Yale–New Haven Hospital for medical treatment.

Dekine was detained at police headquarters on a $100,000 bond and charged with first-degree assault, unlawful discharge of a firearm and possession of a weapon.

He is scheduled to appear in court on July 29.
