Ex-Boyfriend of Travelers Employee Charged With Murder

The ex-boyfriend of a 45-year-old Travelers Insurance employee found stabbed to death in her Hartford apartment on Tuesday has been arrested and charged with murder.

Alex Baez-Franqui, 40, of Hartford, was arrested Wednesday evening in connection with the stabbing death of Luz Nieves, according to police. It's the city's 15th homicide of the year.

Police found Nieves' body after Travelers Insurance called to report that she had not shown up to work in several days, according to police.

Company representatives at Travelers called Luz Nieves an "outstanding employee" and expressed concern about her absence, which they described as "incredibly unusual," according to police.

"We are saddened to learn about the unfortunate loss of one of our colleagues. Our sympathies and condolences go out to Luz’s family, friends and everyone who worked with her," Travelers said in a statement Wednesday evening.

Nieves was found dead at 82 Hanmer Street when police checked the apartment around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday. Police are investigating the death and have ruled it a homicide.

"She had multiple stab wounds to her torso and neck," explained Deputy Chief Brian Foley.

Family members of Nieves described her as a loving mother and grandmother and said the couple never reported any domestic issues to police while they were together.

Baez-Franqui's bond was set at $1 million.
