Hartford Students Eligible for Free Breakfast and Lunch

About 22,000 children are packing up the summer and packing bookbags this morning to head back to school in Hartford and now every student will be able to receive free breakfast and lunch every school day.

That program is made possible through a federal initiative that allows high poverty school districts to bypass the parental paperwork requirements that sometimes kept some students from getting meals they need to be able to learn.

Every child, regardless of income or their residence, will be eligible for free breakfast and lunch.

Hartford's superintendent is taking a bus tour of Hartford schools on Tuesday, highlighting the program at some of the district's flagship schools.

There is a lot more going on in Hartford schools this year.

MLK Jr. Elementary School started a special after-school mentoring program.

Hartford's superintendent will be stopping there, as well as the Academy of Engineering and Green Technology, a national green ribbon school this year, and a magnet school named the best in the nation last year.
