Hayes' Lawyers Demand Prison Interview Details

Steven Hayes is one of two suspects in the brutal Cheshire home invasion and slayings

From the minute “In the Middle of the Night” hit the shelves at bookstores, there was controversy.

Now, lawyers for Steven Hayes, one of two men charged with killing three members of the Petit family during a 2007 home invasion, are demanding that state prison officials release records of communications between the other suspect and the author.

Joshua Komisarjevsky, 29, and Hayes are accused of killing Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters, Hayley, 17, and Michaela, 11, during a home invasion and robbery inside their Cheshire home in 2007. Dr. William Petit was beaten during the ordeal, but was the only survivor.

Brian McDonald’s book about the murders is based, in part, on interviews with Joshua Komisarjevsky, who blames Hayes, 46, of Winsted, and portrays him as smiling and laughing during the horrific crime and during his escape from the house, wearing the school hat of one of the girls who was killed.

Hayes’ lawyers have served subpoenas on the Department of Correction seeking information about jailhouse visits and other communications between Komisarjevsky and McDonald.

They also want Komisarjevsky charged with contempt of a court-ordered gag order.

Prison officials declined to comment because of the gag order.
