Heat Makes Girl Scouts Sick in New Fairfield

About a dozen campers were treated at scene

About a dozen campers suffered heat-related illnesses at a Girl Scout camp in New Fairfield late Thursday night.

The girls at Camp Candlewood were suffering from symptoms of dehydration and complained of feeling light-headed.

Rescue crews responded and treated the campers at the scene, John Hodge, the town's First Selectman, said. Danbury Hospital also sent a doctor, who checked the tents to ensure everyone was OK.

About 60 campers spent the night in the cafeteria, which was kept cool by exhaust fans the fire department brought.

The camp has decided to to close for the weekend because of the excessive heat. One child was transported to Danbury Hospital due to a heat related illness Hodge said.

The camp is set to reopen at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
