Cause of Fire at Multi-Family Home in Waterbury Under Investigation

Fire officials said there was a recent eviction and there might be squatting activity,

Fire damaged a multi-family home on Grove Court in Waterbury Thursday morning and the fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

Fire chief David Martin said a police officer who was driving by the house around 7 a.m. saw flames coming from the building, alerted the rest of the fire department and helped get people out.

Four adults who were home when the fire started escaped and were not harmed.

Martin said people who live on the second and third floor rent the residences.

“First floor had a recent eviction with a report of some squatting activity going on there, so we have some witnesses we’re interviewing,” Martin said.

Matthew Kimbrough, who has lived in the building for seven years, said he was on his way to work when his landlord called him to tell him about the fire.

“This is like everything I own is in there and it’s gone,” Kimbrough said. “I’ve seen fires on TV. I’ve seen fires on the news, but you never think it could happen to yourself.”

The Waterbury fire marshal is investigating the fire with help from State Police and accelerant-detecting dogs.
