Highway Graffiti Costing Taxpayers Thousands

If you drive one of the major highways in and around Hartford graffiti covered signs have been hard to miss.

The spray painted messages, many of which have been political in nature, have been found on some hard to reach signs on I-84, I-91 and Route 9.

"I think anything that defaces public property is causing more problems then good," Rene Wehbe, a driver from Waterbury, said.

The Department of Transportation has been working overnights to clean up the vandalism. It has been a dangerous task for workers.

"The logistics of having to deploy aerial equipment and full sign patterns and to do this at night is the real issue here," Douglas Harris, a DOT maintenance manager, said.

It's becoming quite pricey to return the signs back to normal. One night of cleanup is estimated at $2,500.

"It's costing taxpayers a lot of money and it's an eyesore," Harris said. "We have to spend numerous nights on this activity which is very unproductive."

Many of the latest messages have said '9/11 Truth'. Taxpayers said if people are trying to send a message there are other ways to do it without making everyone else pay for it.

"You've got Facebook, you have social networks, there's a whole bunch of ways to get the messages across," Aaron Weston, a driver from Wethersfield, said.

DOT workers said whomever is doing this is defacing state property and trespassing and should be charged if caught.
