Hikers Rescued After Cliff Fall

Police say two people are recovering at the hospital after falling at least 50 feet from a cliff in Beacon Falls.

Investigators say 21-year-old Matt Fuller and his friend Abby were hiking in the state forest with 23-year-old Andrew Robertson when they got lost just before sunset.  Robertson called his mom, Wendy, for help.

“I got the call around 7pm.  Andrew said ‘Mom were lost and its dark.  Go get the flashlight and come find us.’ That’s exactly what I did,” said Wendy Robertson.

Robertson didn’t have much luck.  Police say at some point, the three hikers fell off a cliff.  Andrew says he grabbed a tree on the way down and hung from it for more than an hour.  Matt and Abby fell all the way down.  It took some time and a lot of equipment to rescue them safely.

“We brought in the stokes basket and oxygen for the hikers.  The darkness made navigation difficult and the rocky terrain was tricky as well,” said Sgt. Keith Schneider of the DEP police.

Matt and Abby were taken to Waterbury Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  Police say everyone is expected to be ok.
