Two political rivals appear to be united over a possible Peace Corps appointment.

U.S. Rep-elect Jim Himes is lobbying President-elect Barack Obama to appoint his former rival, Rep. Christopher Shays, to become director of the Peace Corps.

Himes ended Shays' attempt for an 11th term representing the state's 4th Congressional District in November. He was the only candidate in the state to beat an incumbent.

According to the Associated Press, Himes told the Connecticut Post's editorial board he is rounding up support from the state's four other House members.

Shays is a man of grace and courage who served the 4th District well for many years, Himes said.

Shays said he is interested in the position but hasn't asked anyone to push for his appointment. He served with the Peace Corps in Fiji from 1968-70.

Obama recorded a radio advertisement endorsing Himes during the campaign.
