Historic Colt Building One Step Closer to Becoming Connecticut's First Historical National Park

You may pass by it on I-91 in Hartford and now this historical landmark will come one step closer to becoming Connecticut's first historical national park.

City leaders want to make the old Colt Building and the park around it a place people can stop and spend some time at.  It's part of a decades long push to make the 200 acres of land that once housed the old firearms factory Connecticut's first historical national park. The issue goes before the City Council Monday night.

There are multiple steps behind the scenes that need to take place for that to happen, including a management deal to spell out what role the city will play in the project.

That's what will ultimately help Hartford secure federal dollars for their big plans.

Those include a museum and an observation area overlooking the park.

If everything goes as planned, the national park will officially open by next year, bringing plenty of jobs and revenue for the community.

Connecticut does already have a national historical site -- Weir Farm, located in Wilton.
