Home Invasion Near Schools Prompts Lock Down in Ansonia

A home invasion in Ansonia prompted a lockdown at schools nearby on Tuesday.

Police said they received a complaint at 2:20 p.m. of two people wearing masks entering a home on High Acres Road through an unlocked door.

The suspects confronted a home health aide and the 88-year-old resident. The aide was maced or pepper sprayed but no other known weapons were used during the burglary and assault, Ansonia police said.

After stealing undisclosed items from the home, the suspects fled on foot.

The residence is close to several schools, and Predergast, Mead and Ansonia High School were put on lockdown as police searched for the persons of interest at 3:10 p.m.

"This was done out of an abundance of caution but there was no connection between this incident and the schools," Ansonia Police Department said in a release.

The suspects are still at large but police were able to obtain physical evidence at the scene.
