Horse Pulled from Stonington Stream Dies

A horse in Stonington has died after falling into a frigid stream and being rescued by about 10 people who worked for more than an hour to get it out of the water.

The rescuers told The Day of New London that the 33-year-old female horse fell over a stone wall and into the stream Wednesday afternoon.

The animal was in the water for about 90 minutes before the group was able get it out. Local residents, police, firefighters and farm workers responded. They covered the horse with a tarp and propped its head up with hay bales.

Veterinarians tried to save the horse's life, but it died later in the day after failed efforts to get it to stand.

The horse was owned by a local resident.
