Hospital Merger May Mean 200 Job Cuts

The employees at Saint Raphael's would lose their jobs at the end of July

The merger of Yale-New Haven Hospital and Saint Raphael's Hospital could cost 200 people their jobs.

The jobs being cut will be positions at Saint Raphael's and could happen by mid-summer.

"At the current time, approximately 200 Saint Raphael employees have been told they may lose their jobs at the end of July when the expected acquisition of Saint Raphael's by Yale-New Haven Hospital occurs," said Cindy von Beren, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at the Hospital of Saint Raphael.

Most of the jobs being cut do not handle day-to-day care of patients, according to von Beren.

"Many of those affected individuals are in management and other roles that are duplicative in an integrated hospital, and tend to be in infrastructure or back office roles.

Job losses in these areas were anticipated due to the efficiencies and savings required to be obtained from this transaction. Also impacted are some employees who are not eligible to be hired by YNHH; this does include a small number of direct caregivers," von Beren said.

Earlier this month, Attorney General George Jepsen signed off on the acquisition, which will combine the two hospitals under the Yale-New Haven Hospital name. The newly-merged hospital will operate two New Haven campuses.
