There are troubles for John Dempsey Hospital at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington.
State records show that the hospital has been placed on probation for two years. The probation comes after a series of surprise inspections.
State health officials made unannounced inspections between May and September. Many of the violations involved patients with a history of suicide attempts, according to an agreement reached with state regulators.
In the case of a patient who cut himself with a disassembled disposable razor, the hospital was cited for failing to ensure a safe environment and failing to ensure that his care was supervised and evaluated by a registered nurse, according to the agreement.
State regulators also cited the hospital for failing to meet minimum nursing staffing levels, not safeguarding medications properly and failing to develop a system for identifying, investigating and controlling infections, the Journal Inquirer of Manchester reported.
The hospital, part of the UConn complex in Farmington, signed an agreement with state health officials on Nov. 28 to make improvements. The hospital has agreed to hire an outside consulting firm to review performance at its 224-bed facility.
Hospital Director James Thornton said Thursday that Dempsey is "fully committed to patient safety and continuous quality improvement."
