Hotels, Gas Stations at Capacity

Hotels are booked solid thanks to widespread power outages.

Trying to get a hotel room? How about gasoline for your car?

They are difficult tasks these days in the wake of the October Nor'easter.

Dozens of cars were parked on Farmington Avenue outside a Mobil station, waiting for the gas truck to arrive. Some waited as long as an hour before it arrived.

"I just parked the car here," Wendy Wilson said. "I have two parents at home, we don't have too much gas in the car and who knows what's going to happen."

Finding an open gas station on Monday night was like looking for a needle in a haystack.

"I think it's a little bit crazy, but we'll make it through," Jill Fanelli said.

If you're looking for a hotel room, that's proving to be just as difficult.

The Greater Hartford Convention and Visitors Bureau said only three of their hotel partners had rooms available.

The Homewood Suites in Farmington has been booked solid with families looking to escape their dark and cold homes.

"Even through yesterday, throughout the entire day, we had the phone ringing literally two or three lines on hold nonstop," Hilton Worldwide Area Director Jim Tourtillotte said. "People are trying to book as long as they can."

Hotel workers said some business travelers have canceled their trips, freeing up some rooms, but it's still tight.
