How to Prepare Ahead of Hurricane Florence

Keep an eye on Florence and make sure your hurricane plan is up to date.

That’s the advice for now from experts on the shoreline.

“There’s a lot of things you can do now to prepare that really won’t cost you any money but pay dividends if a storm ever came,” said J.T. Dunn, the former fire chief of Old Saybrook fire.

Dunn urges people to take precautions for any type of disaster, natural or man-made.

“Simple things like making sure your prescriptions are picked up, keep your fuel tank on your car at more than half, planning an evacuation route,” said Dunn.

Officials also recommend that in advance of hurricanes people stock up on three-days worth of supplies and to protect your property.

Something Bernard Maltese knows well after having experienced several major storms by the water.

“Make sure everything is batten, battened down. The outdoor equipment, start bringing it in, close the pool,” said Maltese.

Another way to protect yourself: sign up for CT Alerts which during emergencies allows communities to send important messages to your cellphone.
