Commuters take this as your warning; construction is getting underway at New Haven’s two train stations.
Today, work begins on a multimillion dollar upgrade to Union Station.
What you're most likely to notice is the absence of the mechanical flip board at Union Station -- the last of its kind in the nation. It will be replaced by an LED message board.
There will also be 19 display panels on the platforms and two in the tunnel and 400 new speakers throughout the station so passengers can hear when their train is ready to depart. The public address and visual-messaging systems will also be inproved at State Street Station.

Behind the scenes, crews will upgrade electrical, sprinkler and fire protection systems. The work will also include improved heating, ventilation, rehabilitated elevators and a new pedestrian tunnel, the New Haven Register reported.
These improvements aren’t going to happen overnight. It’s projected to take about a year.
"We're very excited to be starting these important train station projects," James P. Redeker, the DOT's bureau chief of public transportation told the Register. "The improvements will ensure the department's ability to meet our rail customers' needs and expectations well into the future."
Gar-San Corp. of Watertown is undertaking the $4.36 million project.
