Inmate on Hunger Strike for 6 Years Due in Court

A Connecticut inmate who has been on a hunger strike for nearly six years has a hearing scheduled over his refusal to register as a sex offender.

William Coleman, a 53-year-old British citizen, is expected in Enfield Superior Court on Thursday.

Coleman was supposed to be released from prison last December when his eight-year sentence for sexual assault ended, but authorities said he refused to register as a sex offender. He was charged and ordered detained on $50,000 bail.

Officials are waiting to see if Coleman will register.

His lawyers said he hasn't had solid food since September 2007 in protest of his conviction. They said he has occasionally rejected liquid nutrition and has been force-fed numerous times when prison doctors believed his health was at risk.
