Kicking Their Way Into the Record Books

Kickball game in Naugatuck sets record as world's longest

They came, they kicked, they conquered.  A friendly game of kickball in Naugatuck has sent its players into the record books.

Two teams kickballers this weekend set a Guinness world record with a marathon, 54-hour game of kickball.

Their game outlasted the previous record, set by a high school students in Ohio, by a solid three hours.

"It was much harder than I thought it was going to be," organizer Sean Cummings told the Waterbury Republican American. Cummings is the manager of CT Triumph, a Naugatuck co-ed adult kickball league.

It took exactly 54 hours and 7 seconds to play all 345 innings.  The game started on Friday morning and didn't end until Sunday.

Forty two players took part in the game at Linden Park. and the final score was 164-117.

Of course, that's a pitcher's duel compared to the previous record that had a 431-306 final.  Guinness officials were there to make sure the game was legit.

While they achieved the record, they fell about six hours short of their goal.

And early on, it wasn't a given that they would even break the record.

"Friday night in the rain, I didn't think we would make it," player Stacy McPhate told the newspaper.  But they did make it, and when the last ball was rolled, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

The emotion wasn't just for the record, but also what, and who the teams were playing for.

The game was played in honor Juliana Beloin, 6, and Sammy Foran, 2, two local children who survived cancer and it raised more than $45,000 for cancer research.
