Kidnapping Suspect Chooses Trial Over Plea Deal

Richard Shenkman is accused of kidnapping his ex-wife and holding her hostage.

A South Windsor man accused of holding his former wife hostage for hours and burning down their house has rejected a plea deal and wants to go to trial.

Richard Shenkman is accused of kidnapping Nancy Tyler at gunpoint on July 7, 2009, the day the couple was supposed to appear in court for a hearing regarding their divorce case, and holding her hostage until Tyler managed to escape the home that evening.

Shenkman was charged with attempt to commit murder, first-degree kidnapping, carrying a pistol without a permit, violating a protective order, burglary and additional charges.

He is due back in court on Sept. 7 to discuss scheduling his trial.
