Kittens Tossed From Moving Car

73-year-old woman charged with animal cruelty.

Police have charged a Stratford woman with animal cruelty after she seen allegedly throwing kittens from a moving car.

Edna Stelmach, 73, was arrested Thursday.

Witnesses called police around 9:45 a.m. Thursday to report a woman had thrown two kittens from a Mazda SUV while driving on Barnum Avenue Cutoff. Officers found the SUV a short distance away with Stelmach and four other kittens inside.

Police recovered the two kittens tossed onto the roadway. One kitten was dead on the road, the other appeared uninjured, but was taken to a veterinarian to be checked out.

Stelmach denied throwing the kittens from the car, and said she was taking them to a rescue shelter in Westport. She faces two counts of animal cruelty, and will be in court Nov. 4.
