Lake Waramaug, Squantz Pond Swimming Areas Closed

Two state swimming areas are closed after routine testing revealed high bacteria levels, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Swimming areas at Lake Waramaug State Park in Kent and Squantz Pond State Park in New Fairfield were both closed Wednesday after testing showed high levels of indicator bacteria, DEEP officials said. The indicator bacteria does necessarily cause disease, but they are used as a way to measure potential contamination in the water.

DEEP tests all state-run swimming areas weekly to make sure they are safe.

The areas will be retested and DEEP will advise when they reopen.
