Lawmakers Seek Gas Tax Cap

Democrats touted the plan Monday, but Republicans said it's a GOP proposal.

With gas prices continuing to rise, Connecticut lawmakers are once again announcing plans to provide relief at the pump.

State Democratic leaders discussed the initiative at a news conference outside the Capitol Monday afternoon. The six-point plan includes provisions to cap the gross receipts tax on gas at $3 per gallon for wholesale prices and to give the Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner additional authority to impose fines on distributors found in violation of profiteering laws.

Following the news conference Republican lawmakers thanked their counterparts for supporting a tax cap. Republicans said they will speak further on the issue Wednesday morning.

According to AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report, the average price for regular unleaded gasoline in Connecticut is slightly above $4 a gallon, up 27 cents from last March.
