Lawmakers to Debate Smoke Detector Law

The bill would require smoke detectors in buildings undergoing construction.

Many people have questioned whether the Christmas Day fire in Stamford that killed two grandparents and their three granddaughters would have turned out so tragically if there had been a working smoke detector in the house.

Today, state lawmakers will discuss legislation that would require that all houses undergoing renovations, like the one in Stamford, have detectors as long as there is a permit for the work and the house is occupied during the construction.

The fire chief, public safety director and mayor of Stamford will make a trip up to Hartford to testify about the proposed safety bill that would require all residential buildings to have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
