Local Native Killed in Avalanche

Adam Lawton was skiing in British Columbia.

A former East Granby man was killed in an avalanche in Canada on Friday.

Adam Lawton, 30, of Utah, was caught in an avalanche about 130 miles from Calgary, according to CBC News. A helicopter transported him from the mountain to a hospital, where he died.

Climbing and skiing were Lawton’s passions, according to his obituary, and those pursuits had taken him around the world.

In Utah, he worked as the outdoor experiential education manager at Gateway Academy in Salt Lake City, a therapeutic treatment facility for adolescent boys struggling with behavioral, developmental and other issues.

A memorial service will be held on Jan. 14, at 10: a.m. at Northwest Catholic High School, 29 Wampanoag Drive, in West Hartford in the Rice Auditorium.

Donations can be made in Adam’s memory to the campaign to build the Canyon Country Discovery Center at the Four Corners School of Outdoor Education P.O. Box 1029, Monticello, UT 84535, www.fourcornersschool.org.
