Local Marine Attends State of the Union

Cpl. Greg Caron lost both legs when he was wounded by an IED in Afghanistan

When President Barack Obama delivers the State of the Union address Tuesday night, a local soldier will be in the audience as a guest.

U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney has invited Cpl. Greg Caron, 25, of Ellington, to be his guest.

Caron, a member of Plainville-based Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Marines, lost both legs below the knee when he was wounded by an IED in Afghanistan on Nov. 11.

He has been recuperating at Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland since.

“By any definition, Cpl. Caron is an American hero,” Courtney said in a statement. “Last week when I visited Cpl. Caron at Walter Reed, his spirits were high, and he was already vowing to beat his doctors’ projections and run on his new legs.”

Cpl. Caron and his wife, Nina, will attend a dinner in the U.S. Capitol before the President’s address, then Cpl. Caron Courtney will join Courtney in the U.S. House of Representatives Chamber for the address.
