Loose Moose Roams Middlebury

They say curiosity killed the cat, but not a Middlebury moose who seems to have eluded searchers since Monday.

Middlebury police are advising drivers to be careful in the area of Straits Turnpike because a young male moose was spotted at least twice Monday wandering through the neighborhood.

A resident called police about 10 a.m. on Monday to report the antlered animal was in her backyard. She called back five hours later to say "Bullwinkle" had returned, the Waterbury Republican-American reports.

Local police went to the neighborhood to confirm the sighting and then called the Department of Environmental Protection, which has more experience with such things, because the moose was near a heavily populated area and busy roads.

Police are urging drivers to be cautious because moose have been responsible for several serious accidents, mostly in northern New England.

The last reported sighting of a moose in western Connecticut was in July 2008 in Litchfield, when a moose galloped through the center of town. In May, a female moose was spotted in the unlikely city of New Britain. That moose went on a 16-hour excursion until DEP officials shot her with a tranquilizer and brought her to a more remote area in the Northwest Hills.
