Malloy Picks Campaign Aide to Become New Spokesman

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy says his campaign spokesman will become his new communications director.

The Democrat announced on Tuesday that Mark Bergman will take over the position next year, replacing Andrew Doba, who is stepping down at the end of Malloy's first term.

Doba, a native of Ansonia, will remain in the administration as a senior adviser, helping with the transition, the upcoming inauguration and the start of the new legislative session.

Malloy called Doba "a close adviser" who helped him deal with challenging issues, ranging from historic storms to the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

“I’ve valued his counsel, and know that wherever he chooses to work next, he will be an asset,” Malloy said in a statement.

Doba said while he's sad to leave, he is pursuing several opportunities.

“Under any circumstances, this is a difficult job. But the challenges we have faced as an administration have been above and beyond anything that anyone would have foreseen when the Governor was sworn in. As tough as it’s been, the work we did to advance the Governor’s agenda has been the best job I’ve ever had. And while I’m sad to leave, I’m fortunate to have a number of opportunities that I look forward to pursuing in the coming years,” Doba said in a statement.

Bergman was tapped this year as Malloy's second campaign spokesman, in a tight race with Republican businessman Tom Foley.

“I am honored to continue to work with Governor Malloy as he continues to build a better, stronger Connecticut,” Bergman said in a statement. “Under his leadership, Connecticut has achieved significant progress from creating over 70,000 private sector jobs to making record investments in public education to passing an increase in the minimum wage to implementing paid sick leave for workers to passing comprehensive gun violence prevention legislation. I look forward to working in his administration to continue to build on Connecticut’s progress over the last four years.”
