Malloy Vetoes Oxford Airport, State Development Commission Bills

Gov. Dannel Malloy has vetoed five bills.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has vetoed two more bills, bringing to the number of vetoes from this year's legislative session to five.

The Democratic governor released an updated list of signed and vetoed bills on Monday.

The two most recent vetoes concern a tax credit program to encourage development around Oxford Airport and membership changes to a commission that oversees state development around the state Capitol in Hartford.

Malloy said the airport bill was premature because a new state airport authority has been created to boost the economic potential of the state's airports.

Republican State Senator Rob Kane, whose district includes Oxford, Middlebury and Southbury expressed disappointment about the veto.

"How ironic that just as Governor Malloy has embarked on his 'Jobs Tour' of the state, he is effectively killing future Connecticut jobs with one stroke of his pen. … With this bill, the governor was presented with a golden opportunity to actually match his jobs talk with action,” Kane said.

In his veto message, Malloy said this legislation would “extend significant tax exemptions and corporate business tax credits to a large area that encompasses much more land than the area immediately near Oxford Airport.”

That area includes Middlebury and Southbury, the letter to the Secretary of the State said.

“The state would reimburse those municipalities for up to one half of the lost revenues from development in the areas covered within those three towns,” Malloy said.

Malloy said the second vetoed bill would have diminished the state's ability to develop, purchase or use properties near the Capitol.

To date, Malloy has signed 163 bills into law.
