Man Charged with DUI After Plainfield Crash

Plainfield police have arrested a man accused of crashing a stolen car into a guardrail Saturday.

Police say Jacob Hughes, 21, was observed driving erratically around 11:39 p.m. on Prospect Street. When an officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, Hughes turned left, missed a cut through road between Prospect Street and Ward Avenue, and crossed the grass median. The vehicle stopped when it struck a metal guardrail on Ward Avenue, according to police.

According to police, Hughes told officers on scene that he was uninjured, that had been drinking and that the vehicle, a 1999 Chevy Prizm, was stolen. Police say officers then attempted to administer a field sobriety test but Hughes refused. Hughes was taken into custody.

Meanwhile, the registered owner of the vehicle contacted police to report her vehicle stolen. The registered owner reported that Hughes had been at her home earlier that day with a mutual friend. The owner said that all of them left the home together, and she dropped her keys in the car while she ran back inside. This is when Hughes took the vehicle, according to her report.

Hughes was charged with DUI, reckless driving, failure to maintain proper lane, operating a motor vehicle without a license, and third-degree larceny. He is being held on a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned at Danielson Superior Court on Monday.
