Man Dead After Officer-Involved Shooting

A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Wethersfield on Tuesday.

A Wethersfield police officer began investigating a report of a suspicious man in the driveway at a private school on Progress Lane Late Tuesday night, just before midnight, and removed the man from his car.

The man ran, the officer apprehended him and a struggle began.

As they struggled, the man took the officer's service revolver, police said, the gun fell to the ground and the officer retrieved it.

At some point during the struggle, the man put his arms around the officer's neck, causing the officer to fear for his life, police said.

The officer shot at the suspect, who was severely wounded and brought to Hartford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The officer was also injured during the struggle and was taken to Hartford Hospital for treatment.

The New Britain State's Attorney and the Wethersfield Police Chief asked the State Police Major Crime Squad to investigate.

Police are withholding the names of both people involved pending notification of next of kin.

The Chief State's Medical examiner will conduct an autopsy.
