Man Found Shot in Driveway Dies

A 75-year-old man who was found in a South Windsor driveway suffering from gunshot wounds to the face and chest is dead.

Someone driving by 160 Dart Hill Road around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday saw John J. Collins lying in the driveway and called police. When officers arrived, they started CPR and Collins was rushed to Rockville Hospital, where he later died.

About two hours earlier, neighbors heard something that sounded like fireworks, police said. Neighbors said that was around 7:30 p.m.

Sgt. Scott Custer, of South Windsor Police, said early Wednesday that police did not know if the shot was self-inflicted, accidental or intentional.

Local and state police are investigating and call Collins' death suspicious and the home is blocked off for investigation.

“The man’s wife was home. She’s obviously upset. We’ve been speaking with her and other family members, as well as neighbors and persons in the area,” Custer said.

Autopsy results are expected Thursday.
