Man Hits Girlfriend With Butt of Kitchen Knife: Cops

A 32-year-old man is facing charges after hitting his girlfriend in the face with the butt of a large kitchen knife at their Stamford home, according to police.

Police said Matthew Saunders got into a fight with his 33-year-old girlfriend at their house on Avon Lane around 8 a.m. Thursday. The victim's sister called police because Saunders' girlfriend was allegedly afraid Saunders would kill her if she did.

Stamford police said they couldn't get in touch with the victim when they arrived at the home and believe her cellphone "was intentionally shut off to thwart any communications with the police."

Finally, around 11:30 a.m., the victim came outside and told authorities Saunders was still inside the house. He was taken into custody and arrested at the scene.

Saunders has been charged with second-degree breach of peace, third-degree assault and interfering with police. He was also served an outstanding warrant for violation of a protection order.

His bond was set at $10,000 and Saunders was given a court date of Feb. 10.
