Man in Critical Condition After Police-Involved Shooting

Police said an officer shot a man who was firing at police,

State police are investigating after a Berlin police officer shot a man they said shot at two officers.

Jeffrey Yeaw,  45, is in critical condition, officials said. Hartford Hospital medical personnel said they believe the injuries are not life-threatening, state police said.

Yeaw caused an Amber Alert in 2004, according to sources. The second Amber Alert in Connecticut was issued in 2004 when Yeaw took his three children from social workers in Willimantic, according to reports at the time. The children were not harmed.

Berlin police went to a house on Peck Street at 10:35 p.m. on Thursday to break up an argument after a man reported being involved in a dispute with his nephew, police said.

As two officers responded, the uncle met police outside the house.

As police approached the residence, Yeaw fired shots from the house and one officer drew his service weapon and shot, striking him twice, police said.

EMS responded and brought Yeaw to Hartford Hospital for surgery. He is under state police guard.

"It's been determined that there are outstanding warrants. We will lodge those warrants against him once he's been cleared medically," Lt. Paul Vance, of the state police, said.

The Berlin officers were not injured and their names have not yet been released.

Berlin police asked the State's Attorney Office and the state police central district major crime squad to investigate.
