Poughkeepsie Fire Kills Two From Connecticut

The victims were trapped in a house rented by Marist College students.

A fire in Poughkeepsie, New York has claimed the lives of a student from Woodbridge and a man from New Canaan.

The fire broke out early Saturday morning inside a home Marist College students rented.

Three people were killed, including Eva Block, 21, of Woodbridge, Poughkeepsie Police Chief Thomas Mauro said.

Block was a junior studying fashion at Marist, her family said.

Kevin Johnson, 20, of New Canaan, also died in the blaze, according to the Connecticut Post. Johnson was not a Marist student, the paper reported.

The third victim was identified as Kerry Fitzsimons, of Commack, New York, the Poughkeepsie Journal reports.

"It appears that the fire started at the rear portion of the home and tragically spread very rapidly from there, trapping the three victims inside the structure," Mauro said.

The families of all three victims were notified on Saturday.

An autopsy performed on Block found that she died of smoke inhalation.

A funeral service for Block will be held on Monday at Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Family and friends can go to the funeral home at 12:15 p.m. and the service begins at 1 p.m.

No information is yet available on services for Johnson.

Autopsy results on Johnson and Fitzsimons were not released on Sunday.
