Medical Marijuana Bill Heads to House

The bill would allow adults to legally use marijuana for medical purposes.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on a bill on Wednesday that would allow Connecticut adults to legally use marijuana for medical purposes has easily cleared a key committee.

The General Assembly's Finance Revenue and Bonding Committee passed the proposal 36-14.

Republican Sen. Toni Boucher, of Wilton, a vocal opponent to legalizing medical marijuana, expressed concerns that the proposed system will end up costing the state more money. She proposed several amendments to create accounts for everything from enforcement to addiction programs, but all failed.

The bill proposes a system for licensing medical marijuana producers, dispensing the drug and registering qualified patients who are 18 or older suffering from certain specified medical conditions.
