Mental Evaluation for Wesleyan Shooting Suspect

How a lawyer will represent the man accused of shooting and killing a Wesleyan University student in a school bookstore and café will depend on what comes of a mental health evaluation.

Richard Brown says he’s arranged a psychiatric evaluation for Stephen P. Morgan, 30, who is accused of shooting Johanna Justin-Jinich, of Timnath, Colo., to death on May 6.

Morgan appeared briefly Tuesday in Middletown Superior Court and is due back on Jan. 26.

He has pleaded not guilty to murder, intimidation based on bigotry or bias and carrying a pistol without a permit.

Middletown police say they found writings by Morgan, who is from Marblehead, Mass., threatening to kill Justin-Jinich and other Jewish students at Wesleyan.

Immediately after the shooting, the Wesleyan community was put on alert. They considered the shooter a threat to the school community and beyond, authorities said.
