Middletown Police Officers Leave for Law Enforcement Funerals in Dallas

Sveral Middletown police officers left this morning to go to Dallas, Texas to show support for brothers in blue who were killed in an ambush last week.

Before flying out from Bradley Airport, they said it was important for them to make the trip and represent the state.

The officers collected donations from the community to cover the cost of the trip, exceeding their goal of raising $1,500 to pay for airfare in less than a day. Then, Jet Blue and Southwest Airlines stepped up to cover the costs.

Anthony Knapp, Middletown's community resource officer, Sgt. Frank Scirpo and 10 other Middletown police officers made the trip.

Both Knapp and Scirpo have attended several funerals for fallen police officers, including for two New York Police Department officers who were killed in a December 2014 ambush.

"It's powerful," Scirpo said, "It's very powerful to see everybody come together. When I was at Officer Lui's funeral to see officers from Texas and Colorado and California and Florida."

The attack in Dallas is the deadliest on law enforcement since 9/11.

"It's not like we are going to Massachusetts," Knapp said. "This is Dallas, Texas. There is a lot involved trying to get this trip together."

The officers plan to begin attending funerals tomorrow and said the money they raised to cover their expenses will go into a fund to pay for funeral travel costs.
